What exactly are the differences?

Strataglass: Introduced in 1994, Strataglass™ is a premium, flexible coated vinyl sheet engineered to resist the damaging effects from the sun’s rays, environmental fallout, and scratching from handling. It also blocks out 100% of the spectrum of UV light.  Here at American-Marine Canvas & Upholstery, we use 40 gauge Strataglass, which is very durable, strong, and flexible (it can be rolled up easily).  Please see the photo below of a 32 foot Sea Ray Sundancer with a strataglass enclosure with panels that will roll up easily and Seamark sunbrella.

Acrylic (Plexiglass):  Acrylic has a seven year warranty, is more flexible than polycarbonate, is very hard (but not impossible) to break. It is affordable and is a good option for the boat owner. It cannot be rolled up.

Polycarbonate:  The most expensive of the screens and panels, with a five year warranty, Polycarbonate is worth every penny. It is extremely tough and virtually unbreakable, and is often considered as the best, strongest, shatterproof “glass” application. While it is very tough, it also scratches fairly easily and common cleaners can ruin the surface (it must be handled with care). It also cannot be rolled up as it has very much a “glass” feel to it.  See the photo below of a 55 foot Sea Ray with a polycarbonate enclosure.  The clarity of the glass is amazing – at some angles it is impossible to see that there is actually glass in there – it looks completely open, so great is the clarity and thus amazing visibility.

What are the main advantages of using polycarbonate on my boat, either as an enclosure or a dodger?

It offers superior impact strength – over 250 times that of glass (and so is virtually unbreakable) – while appearing so clear that sometimes it’s hard to see that it’s actually in place! It is UV stable, so can be used externally (clear polycarbonate only). Light transmission of clear sheet is 87% giving better clarity than glass, and is comparable to Strataglass although much more durable, longer lasting (and of course, more expensive).

We create custom solutions for every marine canvas and vinyl boat bimini. We will make any size stainless steel and aluminum biminis.  Most biminis are constructed using 7/8ths (aluminum or stainless steel.)  For the bigger biminis, we use 1″ to 1.5″ stainless steel 316.  The majority of biminis we manufacture use Sunbrella marine fabric.  We can also use marine-grade vinyl for binimi tops, either Weblon or Stamoid vinyl.

American Marine covers all applications, including the DOUBLE BIMINI, which puts almost the entire boat into shade on those sweltering summer days.  The forward bimini folds up nicely, neatly and easily for when the boat is in motion.

What is a Boat Bimini Top?

Boat biminis are covers to keep you out of the sun when you don’t want it. They also fold up and out of your way when you would like to be out in the open. We have been making marine biminis since 1922 and can recommend the right top for you. Tops are different than boat covers, which protect the boat in storage.

Not only do we make shades and covers for boats, but we also make windshield covers for planes.  If you have a plane that doesn’t live in a hanger, you’ll appreciate how hot it is inside.  Using a cover makes it very much cooler in the cockpit, almost like it has been in the hanger, and it also protects the windscreen from the elements.

Most dodgers are made out of great durable fabrics like Sunbrella marine fabric and Strataglass, and whilst they are both excellent products, over time the Sunbrella loses its water repellency and the Strataglass distorts your vision.

To prevent these problems, we have designed a special dodger made out of a hard fiberglass top or a UV resistant top with Polycarbonate windows. The result is outstanding – a dodger that’s sturdy, strong enough to stand on if required, it doesn’t leak, and the visibility is as clear as a car’s windshield.  These hard dodgers are highly customized accessories which are tailored very precisely to fit each boat, and can be made in ANY color, any size, and any fabric.  Remember, it’s completely custom-made to fit your boat like a glove.  We serve Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and even the Caribbean, so even if you’re just passing through Miami with a few weeks to spare, let us know, and we’ll do our best to fit you in.

We also specialize in furniture recovering – if you have a favorite sofa, love-seat or chair and just want to give it a brand new look – we can do it.  We have a wonderful suede-like upholstery Microfibre fabric which will make your furniture feel like velvet.  If you want to just buy the fabric from us, that’s fine too – but remember, we will do a great job of reupholstering anything that you want.  We can make a $300 sofa look like a $1200 sofa.
